Guns N´Roses: A matter of concept & the new Gunners
By: Maila-Kaarina and Silver
English version: Maila-Kaarina
At first, when this article was planned, the goal was literally to lift a flag regarding the importance and weight the name Guns n´ Roses carries and will always do, but honestly, it was really hard to handle and took me 2 long months to get the right focus and produce a text.
At the beginning I didn´t know why, it should be easy to write about one of the most meaningful bands to me, but it was a hard and tiring task, not because I don´t like the band anymore or to follow the “fad” which says the band no longer exists and Chinese Democracy is a piece of crap because although this line-up doesn´t make the same sense I am further away from this thought.
Axl Rose has always been the front man and it makes sense his carrying the name. The big problem here is the fact that for us, the fans, besides having to accept a new line-up (good but with less than half of the feeling), very different songs, which is no easy task, we also have to stand the SAME old Axl, creating the same problems, disrespecting the audience with his unjustified delays (in Rio de Janeiro he made people wait for 90 minutes, under rain, on a Sunday, after Sebastian Bach ´s performance that took only 40 minutes) and selfishness.
Yes, I perfectly know that we don´t have to accept anything, it´s just a way of saying things, but it´s a fact that the real gunners (nickname given to all members of the Guns n´Roses family, including band members and fans) always try. Maybe we´re just like those home abused housewives, we are hit, don´t like it, complain, say we´re gonna leave, but always come back. I don´t know but it´s a fact that in spite of all these problems and Axl´s ridiculous attitude, we are still want to see him sing the songs from our good times and we´re still feel the emotion of the old days when we see him running all over the stage and yes, we are still taking our chances buying expensive tickets for a concert we don´t even know if it will really happen (since we never know if he will leave the stage because of a bottle of water or a person dressed like Slash in the audience).
I don´t know how to explain it but the name Guns n´Roses is so big and such a big phenomena that even many years later, bringing almost nothing regarding the old times feeling, Chinese Democracy tour is passing by with sold out tickets months in advance in several countries besides a “very small” cache of 1 million dollars per show (only to the band). And I even dare to say that Axl´s singing is much better than at the end of the Use Your Illusion tour, when his voice was terrible alive making his particular scratchy tone sound like a sick parrot (I saw it with my own eyes in 1995). Some gossip people tell – and it makes some sense – is that all the polemic of leaving the stage in the middle of the concert because of fights with people from the audience who had thrown things at him was actually a big excuse to leave the stage since he knew he wouldn´t handle it to the end of the show. Of course this is only speculation but it´s not a shot in the dark.
For the “proud ex-fans” the band is over, Chinese Democracy isn´t a Guns album, Axl is decadent and there is no sense in this music. But I´d rather follow another line and still pay to see what will really happen, I need my eyes to see things before just following opinions. My intention here is not to lift a flag anymore but to introduce new arguments and refresh the subject.
Alright then...
When Slash and Duff left the band in 1996 and 1997, Axl immediately announced that he would carry the name and from that moment on, none of the fans should expect the same type of hard rock. He made it clear that the line would still be followed but added by experimentation, more modern tones, samplers and so on. In several statements Axl said, 15 years ago, that Chinese Democracy would not have anything in common with the previews albums. This is one of the reasons why I do not consider this album as some kind of “betrayal” to the fans. There is no reason to be surprised nor to feel deceived ´cause he told us...
Now let´s get to another point here: Do you really think there would be any sense to go on with the band playing the same type of music without Slash, Duff, Izzy and Matt? Would it be nice if the vocalist had tried to find some clones to keep the work in the same line? Sorry but I think he would really be decadent if he had done something like this. It would have been ridiculous.
In which concerns to strategy, Axl Rose did the right thing recreating the concept of a project which has gotten new leadership. He wasn´t the only leader before, we had Slash, Duff and Izzy as the main composers for a very uniform project. Axl was the front man, made songs as well, wrote lyrics but wasn´t the only one to command, Guns n´ Roses was really a group. When it was over, there were two possibilities; leave the band behind as part of history and go ahead with a solo career just like Slash, Duff and Izzy did (actually, Slash´s new album has just been released and it´s perfect) or find a new way to it, leaving the past as part of a present history, but bringing something new, just like Axl did, since the Guns´s history is always in the set list and in Axl himself, of course.
In my opinion Chinese Democracy would have been better accepted if it were an Axl Rose´s solo album but I also do think there is sense in the fact of his carrying the name.
Another big problem here, to me, was the long wait we all have to face for this release, 15 years is too long and of course we all got tired. I believe nobody was waiting any longer, not even me who only felt like listening to it almost two months after the release.
Has it lost the sense?
And here I am at the real point: Chinese Democracy is a great album but it´s a work that should have been released 15 years ago to make sense to most of the old fans, since all the polemic which was then involved was intriguing and curious. In 2009 and 2010 nobody really feels like talking about it.
For this I understand, although I don´t agree when they say Axl released an out of dated album. It´s a big mental confusion where the concept got mixed with the music in a way that both got lost. The music is actual but its concept got lost, it´s not interesting anymore.
However, we shouldn´t get in the trap of saying that everything is bad and decadent because of it.
Another important point here is to show that there´s no sign of lack of quality in the entire album and all those selected to participate in the recording or who are really part of the line-up are very good. As a musician I always try to put myself in the same shoes as those who are on stage and I know what a burden and how unfair it can be to sub for icons. We´re not here discussing about Slash´s charisma or comparing the old gunners to the new ones cause it would be ridiculous but the thing is: all new members are EXCELLENT musicians, great professionals and deserve A LOT of respect. The problem is that many people decided just not to accept and stated a final judgment without even checking who they are, what is there in their resumee, who they were before being chosen. This is why Silver and I decided to write this article, to help you, dear reader, keep informed or even increase your curiosity. Now I give the word to Silver, who prepared a small mini bio of each gunner after Izzy, Slash, Duff and Matt. We do not expect to make you change your mind but we want to help you create good arguments to stand your opinion for it or against it.
Stay Rock!

The New Gunners

Dizzy Reed
After Axl Rose, Dizzy can be considered the oldest member of Guns N 'Roses, as part of the group since 1990. He has been in touch with members of the original band since 1985 when his first group, The Wild, used to rehearse in a studio next to the Guns´.
After participating in several rock bands of the L.A. circuit, Rose invited Reed to join the line-up. The two "Use Your Illusions" are his debut albums and Rock In Rio II, in Brazil (1991), was his show debut. At that time in studio he didn´t contribute much regarding music making, only arrangements, but in "Chinese Democracy" Dizzy Reed has made generous contributions in almost the entire album.
Out of Guns N 'Roses, he has participated in recordings of co-workers like Slash, Duff McKagan, Gilby Clarke and Tommy Stinson, besides touring with the band Hookers N' Blow, that plays only cover songs in clubs and bars around the USA.
His efficiency can be checked not only in "Chinese Democracy", but in historical tracks from both "Use your Illusions" such as "Estranged" and "Bad Obsession", in studio or live.
Gilby Clarke
Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Clarke had played in some bands from Los Angeles until he was invited to replace the legendary Izzy Stradlin on Guns N 'Roses, in mid-1991 during the Use Your Illusion Tour – one of the longest and most profitable tours in the history of Rock. He also recorded "The Spaghetti Incident?", The Guns n´Roses famous cover album, before being fired by Axl Rose.
His firing was the last straw that Slash and Duff McKagan needed to demonstrate how unsatisfied they were with Rose, who fired Gilby without consulting them, saying he was just a sideman.
After Guns N 'Roses, Gilby Clarke went through several projects. He still raises the flag of his solo career (which already has 4 full-length albums, plus one EP and one live), he also worked as a fixed member on Rock Star Supernova (with Tommy Lee of Mötley Crüe and Jason Newsted, ex -Metallica) and participated in recordings of bands like Slash's Snakepit, Heart, Nancy Sinatra and MC5. Gilby also works as a producer, having in his CV albums from LA Guns, Vains Of Jenna and The Bronx, among others.
Although he was very limited with Guns N 'Roses, since he could never write with the band, the guitarist's solo work, grounded on a Rock n' Roll bluesy style sort like The Rolling Stones is really recommended to all listeners.
Paul Tobias
Tobias and Axl Rose were friends since childhood and early on he was already part of Guns n´Roses history as the co-author of "Back Off Bitch," song written with Rose in mid-1984.
In 1994, when Gilby Clarke was fired, Paul Tobias took over. If the nerves were already on the edge by Gilby´s dismissal, everything got worse when Rose asked him to re-record parts of Slash´s solo for the version of "Sympathy For The Devil" (The Rolling Stones), which the group also recorded in 1994 .
Paul continued in the band until 2002, where he showed to be exhausted and unwilling to travel frequently. His replacement, Richard Fortus, has been in the band since then. But it was announced by the Guns N 'Roses press that Paul Tobias will continue working with the band in studio, as he influenced the final outcome of "Chinese Democracy"positively.
Robin Finck
Even before he joined the "most dangerous band in the world," Finck was already respected in the music world, having worked as touring guitarist for Nine Inch Nails from 1994 to 2000.
In 1997, Robin was hired to replace Slash for 2 years. As Guns N 'Roses was not very productive during those years, the only thing the guitarist did was participate in the recording of the song "Oh My God", which is part of the movie "End Of Days" soundtrack. Still, he denies having recorded anything for the band while Axl Rose confirms his participation.
Finck divided his time between Nine Inch Nails and Guns N 'Roses until 2000, when he decided to leave Trent Reznor's band to become a full time Guns N' Roses member, where he stayed until mid 2009, when left the post taken by DJ Ashba.
Today, Robin Finck plays only with the Nine Inch Nails, as a tour musician, but his work as Guns N 'Roses guitarist has perpetuated itself through "Chinese Democracy", cause he contributed to some of the best solos on the album, as of "There Was A Time" and "This I Love".
Tommy Stinson
The charismatic bassist has been part of the music world since the early age of 12, he joined the punk band The Replacements, where he stayed from 1979 until 1991. After the end of the group, he formed the Bash & Pop, which was short-lived.
In 1998 he assumed Duff McKagan´s position, and has never left the post, becoming the oldest member of the "new line-up". He´s probably one of the few musicians who contributed to all tracks on "Chinese Democracy", playing the bass and doing backing vocals, besides co-writing "Street Of Dreams" and "Riad N 'The Bedouins".
Chris Pitman
Already known in the American scene for having worked with Tool and the Replicants, the multi-instrumentalist joined Guns N 'Roses in 1998, shortly after the entry of Tommy Stinson, to be the second keyboardist and responsible for sub - bass and the synthesizers effects.
His work can be checked throughout "Chinese Democracy", epic and extravagant in the midst of "Madagascar", the band Tool and his other projects parallel to Guns N 'Roses, as ZAUM and Blinker The Star.
Buckethead
Perhaps the most recognized member of the new Guns N 'Roses, the versatile and virtuous guitarist Buckethead has an enviable resumee, collecting about 30 solo albums and 60 with other artists, including names as Iggy Pop, Les Claypool, Serj Tankian, Mike Patton and Viggo Mortensen.
From 2000 to 2004 he was a Guns N 'Roses member, being part in several passages of "Chinese Democracy", where his style has influenced the contemporary sound addressed throughout the album. But he left the group after disagreements with Axl, who claimed that Buckethead was inconsistent and had a temper, not allowing even his close friends to communicate with him.
After Guns N 'Roses, Buckethead was invited by Ozzy Osbourne to join his band with the condition to remove his mask and his bucket. Rejecting the invitation on behalf of the conditions imposed, Buckethead became again the man of a thousand projects, playing and releasing many different things all the time.
Bryan "Brain" Mantia
The skilled drummer was already well known for his work as a sideman, and also as member of the band Primus from 1996 to 2000.
With Guns N 'Roses, appeared on "Chinese Democracy" and played from 2000 to 2006, until being replaced by Frank Ferrer. It is worth mentioning his work with bands like Primus, Praxis and Buckethead's solo work.
Richard Fortus
Fortus has participated in several projects of alternative rock, like The Eyes, Psychedelic Furs and Love Spit Love, until he was called to assume the post of lead guitarist for Guns N 'Roses, replacing Paul Tobias.
Until now he´s a member of Axl Rose´s troupe, in spite of participating in other projects such as tours with the lead singer Rihanna´s band and contributions to the Paramount Styles.
Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal
With many solo works released, Ron Thal has gained recognition for his incredible ability with the guitar and versatility as a musician and composer.
The guitarist joined Guns N 'Roses to replace Buckethead in mid-2006 and continues in the band to these days. He has contributed to "Chinese Democracy" with some recordings, but the firepower of the New Yorker can be checked mainly in live performances of the world's most dangerous band.
Frank Ferrer
Replacing the technical drummer Brain on some occasions, Frank Ferrer proved to be so competent that took place in the band during the final tour of Guns N 'Roses in 2006.
Versatile and skilled, Ferrer has participated in numerous projects of various genres such as Tool, Tommy Stinson solo project, Wyclef Jean, The Psychedelic Furs and Doro. He has contributed to some recordings for "Chinese Democracy", sharing the post with Brian throughout the play.
DJ Ashba
Even though he didn´t participate in "Chinese Democracy", DJ Ashba deserves quotes in this subject. The current lead guitarist of Guns N 'Roses, owner of the place that was left by Robin Finck, got recognition at the Rock N' Roll scene by participating in groups such as Beautiful Creatures, BulleyBoys, Sixx: AM (from Nikki Sixx) besides contributing with compositions to the latest album of Mötley Crüe, "Saints Of Los Angeles."
With accurate sense of melody, incredible power in the six strings, versatility and high skills in various instruments such as drums, bass and piano, DJ Ashba is a great promise for further Guns N 'Roses works (if indeed any). To get an idea of his efficiency, worth checking out "The Heroin Diaries, Sixx: AM, and the self-titled Beautiful Creatures album.
