Almost Famous

By: Helvécio Parente
English version: Maila-Kaarina

The other day I talked about the film “Rock Star“, that shows the backstage story of a rock band from the 80´s through a young character, in that case, the singer of a cover band. “Almost Famous” is similar: we get to now the backstage story of a rock band too, but this time from the 70´s and it´s through a different character, even younger, a teenager that pretends to be a reporter working  for the Rolling Stone Magazine.

But this film is not a copy! No way! And actually I dare to say it´s even better than “Rock Star”!

It was based on the experience of the director himself, Cameron Crowe, who wrote for the same Rolling Stone when he was younger – I believe not so young as William Miller, the boy who skip classes to travel with Stillwater, a band in ascension which will soon be in a Rolling Stone cover.

And the young William Miller and his saga have given us one of the best movies in the history of rock!

Almost Famous

This film is pleasant, everything works great, the casting is perfect, led by the almost unknown Patrick Fugit, besides names such as Kate Hudson, Billy Crudup, Jason Lee, Anna Paquin, Frances McDormand and Philipp Seymour Hoffman. There are many great songs from the 70´s on the soundtrack such as Led Zeppelin, The Who, Elton John, Black Sabbath, Yes, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Beach Boys, etc. The band Stillwater gives us the perfect impression of having been there!

The “fake” band Stillwater deserves a paragraph...They really rehearsed 4 hours a day, 5 days a week during 6 weeks! Songs interpreted by the band were composed by the director Cameron Crowe, his wife Nancy Wilson (Heart) and “a certain guy” named Peter Frampton. Frampton who has actually taught Billy Crudup the correct guitarist posture on stage (who would say that the “blue naked man” of  “Watchmen” was able to play the guitar!). And our singer Jason Lee copies Paul Rodgers´style, yes, that same guy who today sings with Queen.

The result? Not many times in the history of Hollywood we were able to see  a band that really looked like a real band as they do in this film.... There is even an ego fight between the singer and the guitarist, something like Robert Plant vs Jimmy Page, or Ian Gillan vs Ritchie Blackmore!

The movie brings several memorable scenes such as the sensational part of a plane breakdown, or the entire sequence of  Russell Hammond´s “run away”with everybody singing Elton John´s Tiny Dancer on the bus…
In Brazil a double DVD was released, one with the version we could see in the movie theaters and another with the “director´s version”, showing 2 hours and 40 minutes of film. I truly recommend the longer version. Believe me, it´s not a lot for such a good movie.
