Censorship X Extreme Metal

“ If you make music to sound aggressive and full of hate so the lyrics should also be aggressive and full of hate. It makes total sense to me. And if a song talking about something negative makes somebody feel good after listening to it, and nobody is being hurt, there is nothing wrong with it. I mean, we aren´t really surprised with people trying to censorship us.”
Alex Webster – Cannibal Corpse

This explanation summarizes very well the lyricism in the the extreme music in general.

Even Cannibal Corpse (American death metal classic band), has been chased by censorship for many years.
They cannot play songs from their 3 first CDS in Germany. Besides paying a fine they can be arrested for doing it!

The band has a deal with their long term recording company, Metal Blade, of releasing their material always using two different art covers.  The censored version – usually a 'close' of the original art cover – and the official (for years done by Vince Locke, containing brutal and bleeding scenes with zombies and similar).

This strategy goes due to the fact that, in the USA, the CDS which get those stripes saying parental advisory, are usually boycotted by some big and popular store chains. This categorization was made in the 80´s in order to avoid underage kids to have access to unappropriated material, violent or porn stuff.

My opinion: I can perfectly understand the fact of being worried about the kids but banning products which are dedicated to the adults consume, sounds to me much more like a “witches hunting”.

With the Internet and the access to unappropriated material (not mentioning the violent video games), this categorization got completely old fashioned and only the polemical bands suffer bad consequences.

Another attack to the artistic freedom of expression comes for religious reasons, when bands such as Gorgoroth and Impaled Nazarene had events canceled for being considered blasphemous.

My opinion 2: I believe artists who play extreme music are basically playing 'a bad guys' role and getting adapted to the aggressiveness the music asks for. It´s nothing less than just it.

How many times have you fallen down in a concert and some “friendly hand” came to help you up? How many times have you spoken to members of brutal bands, which talk about death and destruction, and at the end of the concert met very nice people?

By the words of Ronani, vocalist of the band P.U.S.,  from Brasilia: “Let´s keep the violence only in the music.”

Some episodes of censorship in the extreme metal:

- Fans of the black metal British band Craddle of Filth  were arrested in England and Florida for wearing T-shirts of the band which were considered offensive.

The text in one of them was: Jesus is a cunt.

- The American death metal band Impaled had the CD “The Dead Shall Remain Dead” boycotted by many distributors due to the scatological art cover.

In Germany the CD was released with a slip case and the band decided to make 2 different art covers to avoid problems. Full of good sense of humor they divulged that the cover was banned in 80 countries.

- The Finnish band Impaled Nazarene had their CD “Nihil” forbidden in Germany (January, 2007). The album “Latex Cult”, was initially forbidden too but after an agreement by explanation of the content, it could be released. “Nihil”, though, went on forbidden and until now they can´t play any song from this album alive.

The band has a long journey of trouble regarding censorship and has been forbidden to play in Italy, Austria, France and Germany.

- In Poland, February, 2004, after a concert in Krakovia, a local promoter was arrested for breaking a law which forbids “religious offense and animal cruelty”.

The artist was the Norwegian black metal band Gorgoroth, and the concert set had impaled sheep and naked women crucified (one of them fainted during the concert).

The band had the concert  videos confiscated and was taken out of the tour.

Anopsy

Anopsy – Unusual sexual methods ...using the deformed corpses (CD Demo)

Very good death/splatter band from Caxias (Rio de Janeiro).

Songs are very well built, giving space to extreme passages with blast beats, and others with more cadence (it reminds us Cock and Ball Torture, some influences of the band).

Some songs, although duration is around 3:00 minutes, introduce a creative variation of riffs and progress, showing a lot of inspiration in the music making.

The insane vocals of Thiago Splatter are “hog like” in the best Prostitute Disfigurement and Disgorge (USA) school, with some ultra guttural vocals, as we can listen to in the second track, “Anatomopathologic”.

The third track, “Tasting Rotten Pussy”, the heavy punch is 100% present and leaves more space to the bassist Oton. This track presents several exciting riffs, very well done. It´s a highlight on this CD, in my opinion.

Lyrics talk about the traditional “misconduct” and violence, a characteristic of the genre, being even funny in some parts due to the extremism.

It´s an excellent Dennis Pombo (Imago Mortis) production which gives an extra punch to the excellent guitars by Leo.

The drummer is one of the recent highlights in the Rio scene, Mauro Duarte (nowadays he plays in the band Unearthly), with a lot of precision and speed.

After recording this “mini CD” (according to the members), the band became a trio and now the line-up counts on Thiago, not only on vocals but also drums, plus the extra vocals of  Leo and Oton.

Live performances are killing ones and the band is preparing new material to be released soon.

Sinistrices: Dr. H.H. Holmes

H.H.Holmes (real name Herman Mudget), arrived in Chicago in 1886. He got a job at a drugstore which he “inherited” after the mysterious disappearing of his boss (a lady).

Right after that, he started to build a castle over the drugstore. He demanded many secret passages to be built and would constantly change the working team to be the only one to know all secrets of the place.

Holmes used to kill people who were guests in his castle. He would steal their money and murder them. In some cases, he sold the victims bones to medical schools.

He killed his first victim locking her in a vault, where she died asphyxiated. Holmes kept close, excited by her agony screams.

In 1890, during Columbus centennial, several tourists went to Chicago, many of them got in Holmes hands and disappeared forever.

Holmes killed the victims by spreading gas in their rooms and then cremated the corpses.

Years later he was arrested for fraud and told his crimes to a cellmate who delated him.

He confessed to kill approximately 133 people and was hanged on the 7th of May, 1896.

A song about him: Dr. Holmes (He stripped their bones) – Macabre

See ya!
