Interview with Daniel Svensson (IN FLAMES)
By: Rafael Carnovale

Taking advantage on the first visit the band IN FLAMES did to Brazil, we talked to the drummer Daniel Svensson to know a bit about the concerts in South America and the sudden Jeff Stromblad's back off, since he's in rehab recovering from alcoholism.

Rafae Carnovalel: First of all I'd like to ask you about Jesper's health since the note talking about his back off has been just published in the band's official website (this interview was given on the 3rd of January, same day of the band's publishing note)

Daniel Svensson: The note says practically everything but it's important to mention that this decision had to be taken. Jesper had been suffering a lot because of it and there was no possibility for him to do the South American concerts. We decided to give him some time and got a perfect substitute: Niclas Engelin. He is our friend and has helped us a lot. A message to the fans, though. Don't worry, Jesper will be back soon, totally recovered. He didn't leave IN FLAMES.

Daniel: Next question might be a little obvious but what do you expect from this South American tour?

Daniel:I don't know. People I know who have already been to Brazil always say the audience is crazy and passionated, they sing all songs. I don't wanna sound cliché but what I can say is that we are ready to do great concerts and let everybody satisfied. It will be a lot of fun to everybody.

Rafael: "Sense Of Purpose" was released in 2008. Since then you´ve been on tour promoting the album. How are IN FLAMES plans to 2009 doing?

Daniel: We´ll keep on playing in 2009, doing festivals and single concerts since it´s still possible to take advantage on the cd promo strategies. I believe at the end of the year we´ll start to think about a new studio work but we haven´t decided anything yet.

Rafael: Any DVD, even though you´ve just released a package called "Used & Abused – In Live We Trust"?

Daniel: No. Fans liked what we did and to release a new DVD we need to have a final product in mind and it would have to be much better than “Used...” So, we are not thinking about it at the moment.

Rafael: "Sense Of Purpose" for many people have been some kind of In Flames return to the style we listen to in "Clayman" and "Colony". Do you agree on it?

Daniel:I may agree but no totally. We haven´t thought of a “new” In Flames. We just arranged the music keeping the essence of what the band is for us. In this album we gave more emphasis to the guitars and at the same time we try to pay more attention to melodic aspects. Fans really liked it and of course comparison to the material you´ve mentioned showed up naturally. I agree but I like to make it clear that it wasn´t planned.

Rafael: Many people say that bands like In Flames, Childrem Of Bodom and Arch Enemy got a natural evolution in their style. How do you see it?

Daniel: I don´t know if it´s evolution talking about IN FLAMES. We just wanted to work with sonorities we had heard during our tours and found interesting. We always keep our ears 'awake' to new sounds and I don´t think it´s unnatural sometimes to get a different element to our work.

Rafael: Have you already talked about the "set-list" of the South American concerts?

Daniel: Yes. You have to agree that a band with 9 cds choosing a set list is no easy task, specially if it´s for a country you´ve never been before. We´ll try to make a sum of our career emphasizing songs that have a special meaning to our history, adding sounds that might surprise you. We agree that it has to be a concert for fans and they know what´s best (laughs).

Rafael: Thanks a lot Daniel. Thanks for the interview and be free to leave a message to the Brazilian fans.

Daniel: Thank you. Come and see us play because we are very glad to be in Brazil and South America. It will be a great show.
