After 3 date and 2 venue changes finally Rio de Janeiro was able to see Ian Astbury [vocals], Billy Duffy [guitar], Chris Wise [bass], Mike Dimkich [rhythm guitar] e John Tempesta [drums], on the 13th of October at Circo Voador.

The band´s Brazilian tour had passed by Porto Alegre, Curitiba, São Paulo, Brasilia, and Fortaleza (Ceará Music Festival) and was finished in Rio de Janeiro, pleasing all fans who enjoy the CULT from the 80´s. Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy are still excellent musicians, the first with a very strong voice and the second with his 100% rock´n roll guitar riffs from the beginning to the end of the set.

I should say, though, that if we consider stage attitude, the trophy wouldn´t go to either of them but it would do to the bass player Chris Wise who was extremely kind and smiling during the entire concert. Ian preferred to keep some kind of “Jim Morrinson” attitude on stage talking little (almost nothing, actually) and moving not much than necessary.

I wouldn´t be fair if I said it wasn´t good though. The rock´n roll attitude was present from the first to the last song, however, it was “Britishly shy”. Circo Voador wasn´t crowded and neither empty, specially if we consider that the concert was on Monday and the advertising was really weak.

Actually, there could have been even less people if the fans, themselves, hadn´t worked so hard to advertise the event. This is something I want to write about since it was the first time I received so many messages from ordinary people, who had nothing to do with press, talking about a concert. And I´m not talking about spams but about fans calling friends and other fans. I´d say that The Cult´s fans from Rio have impressed me positively in this matter.

The band got on stage punctually at 10pm playing Little Devil followed by Rain and Sweet Soul Sister. The sound was great – as usual at Circo Voador, which I consider the best mid size event´ site of Rio – and the band was playing really well in spite of the “shy” stage attitude. They seemed to be tired perhaps because of the 5 concerts they had done before or even because of the heat, since it was a very hot evening.

The set list was perfect to all fans from Love to Sonic Temple, all hits and representative songs were played but I believe recent fans might have been a little disappointed. They practically didn´t play recent stuff, not even Painted on My Heart that was a big hit here.

Particularly I see that as a positive thing since most of the fans were expecting to hear exactly what the band played and would have left the place truly disappointed if the concert had focused the post-Sonic Temple phase. Songs such as Eddie, Fire Woman, Nirvana and, of course, She Sells Sanctuary were sung in choir by the crowd. The set list was perfect although it was pretty short with only 14 songs. According to the set list played in São Paulo which I received by email, they played 3 songs less. It was a straight concert, going to the point. There weren´t those boring moments full of thousands of guitar and drumming solos and this is something I also consider positive. There weren´t boring moments.

I cannot compare this third The Cult´s concert in Rio with the 2 previews ones(93 and 2006) since I wasn´t able to see them but I really believe none of the fans went back home feeling disappointed, and nobody can question the band´s efficiency. I´d like to thank 3 people: Renato Santa Cruz and André Querido, really cool fans that helped me write the set list and Andrea Andion, Circo Voador press assessor who has accredited Hard Blast for covering it. Thank you all.
