KISS – Rio de Janeiro – Praça da Apoteose – April 8th 2009

WE HEARD IT LOUD AND IT WAS FUCKING GOOD!

Rio de Janeiro had to wait! Those who didn´t go to their first concert here in 1983 had to wait for 26 years to see KISS alive. One thing is a fact: IT WAS WORTH!

Praça da Apoteose hosted the hottest band in the world on the 8th of April and it was surely unforgettable.

This concert could have been sold out if it weren´t for the price, the most expensive I´ve seen: 350 reais which is over 150 dollars to stay near the stage but with no seats or 160 reais ( a little less than 70 dollars) to stay very far from the stage. Ok, it´s Kiss but this is Brazil and our minimum wage is 100 dollars per month.

If you are a student it´s possible to pay half price by showing your student id and at least 80% of the Brazilians have a fake student id. They say this is why it´s so expensive but I say it´s bullshit! Such a price is outrageous! But this is another discussion.

SILENTIUM – Goth/Dark Metal

Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer got on stage with the most perfect set list: ALIVE I, since this tour is called ALIVE 35 and celebrates the album´s 35th anniversary. All fireworks, lights, explosions and everything you can imagine for a Kiss concert was totally part of it and the audience could see 2 hours of great music, with a great sound and the most spectacular special effects. “Deuce”, “Strutter”, “Got to Choose” and “Hotter than Hell” with Mr. Simmons spitting fire were the first 4 songs. After that a torrential rain started. A real storm that I have to say, made it even better. The rain gave even more energy to the audience who celebrated it as if they were in a “shower party” together.

Paul Stanley was in the middle of a cold and sometimes we could see something wrong was going on with his voice but anyway it wasn´t a problem. This guy really sings and all the charisma involved would kick the ass of anybody who had dared to say anything bad about them.

Gene was great too, of course, and made everybody scream the rips out with his singing, his tongue, with the fire and the blood spitting.

Tommy Thayer is not Ace but deserves all respect. The guy is an excellent guitarist and does what a Kiss member must do. It can be a little strange for those who love Ace Frehley since he has always been a very particular guitarist. He isn´t virtuous, he makes mistakes but he is fuckin´ Ace Frehley and also one of the most creative musicians and doesn´t need to be virtuous since his creativity runs over the rest. Ace is Ace but I believe Tommy is the best substitute Kiss would have ever found for him. He plays a lot and he enjoys being there. It was a perfect moment when he started his solo after playing “She”. Screams wouldn´t stop while he was aiming the guitar to the sky and fireworks came out. We could smell the gunpowder and whenever he knelled down and shot we screamed.

Eric Singer did a great job too. Of course, no new arrangements, we saw him playing just like Peter Criss and this is what a Kiss fan wants. He sang “Nothing to Lose” and did a great solo for 100.000 years.

Paul Stanley walked all over the stage, interacted non stop with the audience, made jokes, jumped a lot, Gene Simmons kept the eye contact from the first to the last song.

Unfortunately because of the rain we couldn´t see a really expected moment: Paul didn´t fly by the cable over us. The cable was there showing it was supposed to have happened but when they tested it after the rain stopped we saw it was impossible to happen. Even though it was a little disappointing, of course it´s understandable, we don´t want him dying electrocuted.

“Rock´n roll all nite” was also a great moment. It´s the song a true fan would probably use to go to the bathroom or take another beer but the production on stage turned the cliché into one of the most perfect and beautiful moments of the show. Little pieces of foil paper and white paper where thrown by wind canyons and together with the lights we could see one of the most beautiful scenes ever. If you looked around you would have seen everybody with a happy smile on the face rising the hands to let the paper fall on it. That was a moment for strong happy heartbeats. It was really perfect.

“I love it loud” was another extreme moment. Everybody was singing together rising the arms with the lights in a perfect sync. “Detroit Rock City” closed the set list and 2 hours passed as if they were 30 minutes. We were tired, our voices were rough but we would have stayed there all night long if necessary. If God hasn´t given rock ´n roll to you yet, you should go to a Kiss concert. All blessings will be yours.
