"Sonic Boom" joins elements from the entire Kiss career: the classic rock ´n roll done until "Love Gun", some spices of 80´s hard rock found in albums as such "Animalize", "Asylum" and "Lick It Up" and some heavy metal shots (not too much, of course) which can be seen a little more in albums like “Revenge", "Creatures Of The Night" and "Carnival Of Souls: The Final Sessions". Some more contemporary elements inherited from Paul Stanley´s solo album, "Live To Win", deserve to be mentioned too. Of course, the classic sound reigns here but it´s undeniable the fact that there is a little of everything.
Song by song, let´s go: the opening comes with "Modern Day Delilah", which has been released as a single a couple of months ago and got the 18th position in the American charts of singles. This song doesn´t need to be written about since it can summarize everything I said in the previews paragraph in 3 minutes and 36 seconds, with heavy riffs, a guitar god solo, excellent bass and drumming lines and, of course, the amazing and always perfect Paul Stanley vocals. It´s impossible not to be present on the band´s tour set list. |
"Russian Roulette" is the first song in which Gene Simmons takes the leading vocals in the album and the Demon doesn´t let us down. Strong bass lines, heavy drums and a totally 70´s guitar, besides the rock-n-roller voice of Mr. Simmons. I would sum saying this song in a gathering between "Deuce" and "Not For The Innocent".
"Never Enough" is a based hard rock, with an 80´s atmosphere but 70´s punch. Impossible not to compare the verse part with "Nothing' But A Good Time" (Poison) and the end of the chorus with "Slide It In" (Whitesnake), but there is a vestige of Kiss since it´s Kiss. Once more Stanley outstands with his strong voice and Thayer plays a very good solo, worthy to have Ace Frehley as “professor”.
"Yes I Know (Nobody's Perfect)" starts officially the record´s filling and, apart from most of the other albums, things start to get even more exciting. The 70´s punch, the "Bonhanian" drums, Gene Simmons´s voice, the striking riffs, the chorus with all characteristics of a real rock hymn... everything is perfect on this song which I consider one of the best in the album, no doubt!
"Stand", the longest track is really retro: guitars sound definitely as if they had been played by Ace Frehley and Paul Stanley (by him they were, hehehe), but in a better way, while the drums and the bass sound perfectly cohesive. Gene´s and Paul´s voices meet each other beautifully, referring to the classic band´s duets, as "God Gave Rock N' Roll To You II" and "Shout It Out Loud". The chorus already make the song worth but the entire song is great. It´s one of my bets for the new tour set list.
"Hot And Cold", even though it´s a recast from the old demo "Rotten To The Core", it sounds wonderful, we should highlight Eric Singer´s drumming here, indefectible as usual and the great lyrics. The pace is 100% rock n' roll, powerful backing vocals and, of course, a marvelous Thayer´s solo – this guy´s playing is really awesome!!
"All For The Glory" is the first song with Eric Singer´s leading vocals which hadn´t been sung by another drummer before. And, for those who believe in Mr. Singer, there is no doubt this is a very good song, with vocals very close to Peter Criss´s but with Eric´s tone. Let´s honor the chorus which, as the rest of the song, is signed by Paul Stanley and to the solo, one of Tommy´s best in the album. One more bet to the set list!
"Danger Us" follows Starchild efficient line: Paul Stanley doesn´t fail here showing one more perfect song, striking, with a real rock n' roll core, stripped and with no worries about labels or classifications, after all, rock is synonym of fun. Here we´ve got one more chorus to be highlighted, perfect to be sung in crowded stadiums during a concert. Eric Singer deserves all highlights with his drumming, powerful and efficient as usual.
"I'm An Animal" looks like Gene Simmons, in all aspects. I can start by the lyrics, dealing with the pervert Mr. Simmons favorite subject: sex. In the instrumental part we can find a heavy drumming, a furious guitar and a powerful bass. Vocals cannot be left behind, Simmons ones as well as the striking backing vocals, specially at the end “a-la The Demon” Gene´s characteristic.
The album gets´close to the end but the feeling it gives me is that it´s getting hotter and hotter after each track. "When Lightning Strikes" starts and I already feel as if I were inside the Sahara desert with the first riff. I state here that this song is one of the set list promises. It has surprised even those Shiite and annoying fans who say Tommy Thayer is a jerk who stole Ace Frehley´s fame. What is this song, my dear God? Thayer has a perfect voice, just in between Gene Simmons´s and Ace Frehley´s voices. This song has a great pace. A perfect song to have sex or to drink with friends. Everything sounds incredible here, it´s impossible to highlight something specific.
To close the best album of the decade, nothing would be better than a rock anthem sang by the myth! Paul Stanley shows up, as always, as a natural rockstar in "Say Yeah", from his powerful singing to the music making (specially the chorus), also signed by Gene Simmons and, YEAH, Eric Singer! Great solo, excellent bass and drum lines, great guitars and perfect pace, just like a hymn!
I finish this text very excited and deadly recommend you to buy this album as soon as possible, dear readers. Thanks a lot Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer! Now it´s time to look forward: the fifth return from the 4 knights to Brazil.
