At the door of BAR DO TOM, place where Tony Martin and Joe Lynn Turner did their concerts in Rio, fans were very apprehensive: “Do you think he will play Eternal Idol?”
“Will he play Headless Cross?” They didn´t know what to expect. After a 10-year long career break Tony is back and, of course, Brazil wouldn´t be left behind this big thing. Everybody there was full of expectations since the man was Black Sabbath´s voice for 10 years!
The beginning of the concert was announced around 9:30pm but technical problems on the stage delayed it a bit. Martin, worried not only about the sound quality but also with the audience standing in front of the stage without understanding what was going on, took the microphone to apologize and started helping the technicians solve the problem.
Ok. 10 minutes later everything was fine. Lights were off and Geoff Nichols (keyboard player who had played with Black Sabbath) began the introduction that woke the audience up keeping them like this until the end of the concert.
Tony Martin opened the set list with The Law Maker, followed by Devil and Daughter and Eternal Idol. He did such a great concert.
The musicians who played with him were the Brazilians Lucas Souza (Glitter Magic) and Davis Ramay (guitars), the bass player Diego Padilha (Krystal Tears), the singer Riq Ferreira doing the backing vocals, besides the great Geoff Nichols on the keyboard and Danny Needham, on the drums, that I must say was a show inside the show. The drums´sound was fantastic and Danny´s power while playing together with his amazing presence on stage made everybody astonished, surprised and everywhere we could listen to the comments: “Who is this guy on the drums?” “My God, what´s that?”. Honestly he is one of the best drummers I´ve seen alive and I´m not exaggerating it.
Geoff Nichols, some kind of “rare creature” was very nice and kind to all fans and his samplers and effects gave a special characteristic to the show. Well done effects are always welcome in my opinion.
Although there were many prerecorded vocals and effects, Tony´s voice was great. It was a very good Heavy Metal concert with great songs from his Black Sabbath era such as When Death Calls, I Witness, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle, besides songs from his solo career like Scream, in which Martin played some violin together with the guitars and Raising Hell, from his solo album also called Scream. As it couldn´t be different, bis time: Headless Cross and When Death Calls.
The concert was very good and even though it was composed basically by Black Sabbath´ songs, we could see Tony´s personality above everything. Specific characteristics the allow us to see things on a different perspective. It wasn´t a show for Black Sabbath´s fans but a concert for Tony Martin´s fans who admire the Black Sabbath of his phase. A competent Heavy Metal concert for all those who like the style, carefully prepared by a great musician who cares for quality in everything he does, gives his best and does an excellent job.
It was beautiful.
