Krow is a new band.Their first recording was released in 2006 (the “Contempt for you” EP ), and on their first full lenght, they show a lot of quality and fire power.
The band plays a diversified death metal, with brutal parts, thrash influences and very good musicianship.
“Conspiracy of hate” opens the CD, intensely, with a heavy intro followed by a blast section, with an intense and well crafted riff. Guilherme Miranda´s powerful voice follows the guitar´s riff. I really like this double voice/guitar attack, which, in my opinion, brings more power to a composition. Halfway through the song, a surprising heavy mid tempo section changes, momentarily, the course of the composition and gives way to an inspired solo that avoids the chaotic style so common in that kind of music.
The second track , “Black Wave, starts powerfullt with a heavy riff in 4/4-6/4 and a guitar duet. From there, it goes to a combination that is one of my favourites: break followed by a guitar riff that brings a high speed section. Boom!
“Our race makes our misery “ is another massacre with a blast intro and speed thrash rhythm with crushing riffs. The intensity and quality continue with the excelent “Abominations” which starts with a theme that reminds me a little bit the American band “Incantation”.
One thing that stands out on this song, and on the rest of the CD, is the noticeable presence of the bass in the mix, something very rare on extreme bands, where usually this instrument is completely buried by the guitars and drums. One of the highlights is exactly the moment where the bass plays a demolishing thrash riff which turns into a death metal section, showing how the two styles are closely connected to each other.
It´s kind of a cliche to include an acoustic song on a metal CD to show some extra musicianship and melody (woops, danger! hehe), but, actually,“Prelude” is a nice instrumental with the guest appearance of guitar player, Luiz Maldonalle on acoustic guitar.
The title song shifts through various styles, beginning with a total 80´s death metal section, followed by a heavy part in odd time signature and then the “already familiar” destruction, followed by a staccato guitar riff (and great double bass work by the excellent drummer Jhoka Ribeiro), which backs up another good guitar solo.
Thrash/blasting drums and a heavy rhythm with tribal drums are all present in the intro of “Living in the dark”, which has an intense thrash /blast variation during the whole song.
"Hate, disgrace and wrath" begins “epic”, and then turns into a mid tempo thrash with some fast parts, blasts and a death/black section with guitar/bass (really noticeable here) playing the same riff together.
The band closes the cd with the furious 80´s death metal flavoured “ Overwhelmed”, which presents the type of variations found on the other songs, alternating heavy moments and thrash influences.
Intense !
With Crow , we have another example that Minas Gerais,Brazil, still produces quality and relevant bands on the brazilian (and global) extreme scene, like Sepultura , Sarcófago, Sextrash, Vulcano, etc
And here we go again with a serial killer from the old times.
Believe it or not, but this “stud” (could it be the moustache?) made several female victims after attracting them, through single women classified adds.
Definitely a BAD deal.
Although beeing an ugly man, Landru, born in 1869, was a well succeeded guy with women due to his “mojo”.
He was said to have an intense sex drive.
Landru´s criminal career started after he was fooled by his boss. After this, he decided to live as an outlaw.
Landru, who worked with furniture, initially tried to trick old women to take their money. He made more than 300 victims and at the age of 3, he was judged and arrested by fraud.
He tried to commit suicide.
In the next 10 years, he went to jail 7 more times, which left his family humiliated and without money, and made his father commit suicide.
In 1914 he started not only to fool old ladies but to kill them as well.
Some of them were attracted with adds in the newspaper, where he said he was a widow looking for company, others were costumers of his furniture business.
Landru changed his name everytime he had a new partner.
In 1917, his neighbors noticed a strange black smoke that came out from his chimney, but this was forgotten.
Landru killed at least 10 women, plus the son of one of them and her 2 dogs.
To keep the victims´relatives away, Landru wrote fake letters telling them that everything was ok.
He was, finally, unmasked when the son of one of his victims died and relatives went after the deceased´s mother.
These relatives made contact whith another family that had a missing relative, and Landru was seen (in an old address), followed and denounced to the police.
No human corpses were found at his home, but dog bones that belonged to one of the victims, and a book with cryptic writings referring to expenses, and 1 list with the name of the missing women were discovered.
After interviewing the neighbours that mencioned the black smoke, Landru´s oven was searched ADN small human bones were found among the ashes.
Landru was arrested, accused of 11 homicides and, after a trial that lasted one month, was sentenced to be executed on the guillotine in February 1922.
He was totally non cooperative during the trial and refused to give his last words saying that it was an insult.
Before his execution, Landru gave to his lawyers a painting that he made in prison .
Later it was discovered that inside this painting there was a confession and an explanation of how he got rid of his victims´corpses.
