Slayer – The Forum, London/UK (03/06/10)

Review and pics: Denis Augusto

This was a long waited gig. Not only because we’re talking about Slayer, but also because it was initially supposed to happen in March. It ended up being postponed as Tom Araya decided to undergo surgery to finally try to fix a spine problem which had been haunting him for years. As one may expect, Araya was not in his best shape for doing his characteristic headbanging; in fact, he hardly moved throughout the whole set, which was clearly adapted to his condition. I haven’t seen that many songs from Seasons in the Abyss live since the nineties – actually not even in the nineties. All mid-paced songs were there: ‘Blood Red’, ‘Skeletons of Society’ and even ‘Expendable Youth’.

The show started with two new ones though, right after the playback of the World Painted Blood’s intro. What followed was its title track and ‘Beauty Through Order’ which sounded fucking great despite the mummified frontman and the low volume coming through the speakers, in my opinion. All other members were rocking their socks off and Kerry King – as usual – seemed the more fired up. As the forth song, ‘Disciple’, was reaching its first minute, the band stopped playing and let most people wondering what the hell was going on. After a couple minutes Tom Araya announced that some more exalted fan had hurt himself real bad near the stage, and that they needed to wait for the ambulance to arrive in order to remove him since the bouncers didn’t want to touch the poor fella and make it worse. About 15 minutes later (it felt like a lifetime) the whole band came back on stage and played the interrupted song again, in its entirety. Things were now beginning to get back on track, but the band needed to get hold of the audience once and for all, so next came ‘War Ensemble’ and put the hurdle to a rest.

The good thing about Slayer is I can’t recall a single shitty tune written – or covered – by them so, although I missed a few numbers (they didn’t play anything from Show No Mercy, Hell Awaits, Divine Intervention and Diabolus in Musica) all songs present in the set were at least ‘good’ and performed with balls. Other highlights were ‘Angel of Death’, ‘Seasons in the Abyss’, ‘South of Heaven’ and ‘Raining in Blood’.
